New to Australia and Applying for a Super Fund?

Frequently referred to merely as “super,” superannuation is long-standing savings transport for retirement in Australia. This is called the pension system in numerous countries.

The Superannuation Guarantee

Most individuals working here are titled to be paid with the Superannuation Guarantee by their employer, meaning your employer should pay at least 9% of your income into a super fund if:
• You are over 18 years old
• are paid at least $450 (before tax) within a calendar month; or
• you are under 18;
• are paid at least $450 (before tax) within a calendar month; and
• work thirty or more hours within a week.

It does not matter if you’re in Australia in order to work temporarily or permanently, or if you are working part time, full time, or casually – and meeting the criteria above, you should acquire Superannuation Guarantee contributions.

If you do not feel prepared to choose, there a default super fund that the contributions will access if you do not make a choice. There are numerous different kinds of superannuation funds, and frequently you will be eligible to select which fund you would like to enter. Your employer should provide you with a standard selection form in 28 days of you starting your job. Make certain to ask if you do not receive one.

Can I move my overseas retirement funds to an Australian superannuation fund?

Yes, you can move your super (or equivalent) balance from an overseas pension or super fund to an Australian superannuation fund, or yourself, depending on your overseas super fund’s rules.
